Chapter 1 · Flickering Stars
The mess hall was loudest at dinner.
Kira sat alone at the corner table — her table, the one with the wobbling leg and the view of the recycling chute. Around her, cadets clustered in laughing knots, their Asterials draped over shoulders or coiled beneath chairs. The air hummed with a warmth she could see and never touch: dozens of bond-threads, gold and faint, crossing the room like the rigging of a ship she wasn't on.
She watched through her peripheral vision. That was the trick — never look directly. Direct looks invited conversation. Conversation invited questions. Where are your parents? Why haven't you bonded yet? What's wrong with your Resonance?
